Welcome to the DCM Board Blog!

The Board of Directors determines the vision and mission for the Durham Co-op Market, and works closely with the General Manager to ensure the financial success and ethical operation of the Market. The Board is elected by the owners of the Co-op, and represents the needs and interests of our diverse community. We will update this page with upcoming Board events and other important information.

A message from the board:

Dear Owners,

I want bring you up to date on our progress in expanding the board to include employee participation. A group of board members and staff held a preliminary meeting at the store with facilitator Andrew Sachs on Jan. 25 to lay the groundwork for our first formal meeting. That meeting is set for Tuesday, Feb. 16. Per the workers’ request, that facilitated meeting will be limited to board and employee representatives only.

The employees have drafted a plan that is very similar the model in our current Articles of Incorporation (AOI).  Meanwhile board members are reaching out to 16 co-ops around the country that have been identified as “hybrids” in one form or another to determine the challenges and rewards of their systems and to hear about lessons learned.

We’re all very pleased with the progress so far.  We’re excited to be engaged in this collaborative process that will produce a governance system that recognizes the interests of all of our stakeholders.

Please join us for another owners’ forum on Tuesday, Feb. 23 from 7:00-8:00 PM at the Emily K Center, 904 W Chapel Hill St, Durham, NC 27701. Click here if you would like to read the notes from our January Owners Forum.

And as always, you can contact us at info@durham.com

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Frank Stasio,

President, Durham Coop Market Board of Directors.

A message from the board:

Dear Owners,

We invite you to join us for a meeting next month to bring you up to date on our progress so far in our collaboration with staff on board participation. We’d also like to gather input from you. As you know the issue of worker participation came up during the election process this year. The employees and the board have agreed to work with a professional facilitator to craft a plan for staff representation on the board of directors.

We will work with Andrew Sachs at the Dispute Settlement Center in Carrboro. Andy has a long history working the folks at Weaver Street, which as you know is a successful example of a hybrid Worker/Owner board. Our first formal meeting has yet to be scheduled. We’re aiming for the end of January.

The board would like to meet with you before that to hear your thoughts and tell you about our preliminary meetings so far.

Please join us-

Tuesday, Jan 12
6:00-8:00 PM
Emily K Center
904 West Chapel Hill Street
Durham, 27702

If you can’t join us please feel free to email your thoughts at: info@durham.coop

Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,
Durham Coop Market Board of Directors
