From Nick Williams – Wine & Beer Coordinator
The Croatian Coast is home to picturesque crags dropping to electric blue seas, world-class seafood, and yacht-borne celebrities absorbing the Adriatic sun. It’s also home to a vibrant and distinctive wine making culture, one whose bounties are increasingly available in international markets like ours.
I love anything that debarks from seldom-traveled byways, so of course it thrills me to share our Croatian selections with you. These wines are vivacious and fresh, yet rich in flavor profound and depth, and each one comes to us from very small family farmers working organically. If you can’t make it to Croatia this summer, allow me to offer the next best thing. Come taste these great wines during Winesday on July 21st, 5-7pm!
Plenkovic Zlatan Rose “Otak” (Plavac Mali), Hvar, Croatia, 2016 – Ripe and fruity with cherry and raspberry notes up front. A suspicion of flinty mineral wafts up from the glass and keeps the wine tangy and bright. $19.99
Pilizota Babic, Dalmatian Coast, Croatia, 2014 – Firm yet supple, this is a beautiful example of the mysterious Babic grape. Fig, blueberry, and earthy aromas evoke a well-kept barnyard edged by brambles and fruit trees. $20.99
