Nick’s Wine of the Moment
LA FOLLE NOIRE D’AMBAT
In the spirit of my efforts to bring the rare and esoteric to these humble grocers’ shelves, allow me to introduce you to the Fronton region of Southwest France, and it’s beautiful indigenous grape, Negrette.
Named after its almost-black skin, Negrette is capable of producing wines of depth and delicacy. High in tannins, the wines are structured and complex, buoyed by floral notes and brightened by threads of minerality.
It comes to us in the form of La Folle Noire d’Ambat from Domaine Le Roc, a small producer specializing in Negrette. This wine is bursting with cherries, violets, and licorice, with a distinctive smoky tang that Domaine Le Roc’s Ribes family attributes to their brick-red, iron rich soils.
Why am I telling you this? Because I love it dearly and I want you to feel the same. Come snag yourself an early present…
