Pecans with a Purpose

These aren’t just any pecans. These are pecans with a purpose! Support black farmers and serve these delicious pecans on your holiday table!!

These pecans were grown by the farmers at New Communities, a trailblazing civil rights organization that has worked for more than 40 years to empower African American families in Southwest Georgia and advocate for social justice. New Communities was created during the Civil Rights movement to provide a safe haven for black farmers and families who were being driven from their land for participating in the movement. They are recognized as one of the original models for community land trusts in the United States. This community has fought for more than 40 years to keep their vision alive despite decades of racism, being driven from their land, and fighting a decade-long court battle in the landmark case of Pigford vs. USDA.

This year brought a whole new set of challenges to the farm, as new trade tariffs and recent hurricanes threatened this season’s sales. Their prized pecans needed a home, and so the Durham Co-op Market came together with our friends at Eastern Carolina Organics to bring them to you. Help us show up for these inspiring farmers! Take home some delicious New Communities pecans for your holiday!
